We are hurling through space/time at approximately 2,700,000 MPH. The suggestion that we traveled 65 million miles since this time yesterday is somewhat mind-boggling for most to comprehend. Yet, there are individuals who do little else but attempt to make sense of it all. Copernicus not only cleared up a few mysteries about our solar system but he managed to initiate the process of separating church and space. If, like Copernicus, we could set dogma aside for a moment and spend a little more of our precious time trying to understand the natural world, imagine how we all would benefit.
As a young man in my early 20s I, and a group of about 8 friends, traveled to Minneapolis to see Stevie Wonder and the Rolling Stones. Early that day before the concert, we all decided to do some Purple Double-dome acid and take a stroll downtown. While in the midst of our mental crescendo we came across a Piet Mondrian exhibit and followed the crowd into the museum. As we first gazed upon his work, one of my group loudly proclaimed, “I came to see art, where is it?” Any of you who have ever done LSD know that, humility, tact, manners etc. only surface by accident. Anyway, he set off a chain reaction as we all got into the act, “The poor man must have broken his compass”, “I understand he invented alphabet blocks”, “Finally, someone who colors within the lines”. The crowd gasped and fell back as I, and several others, fell to the floor holding our guts and crying with laughter. Another interesting fact about LSD is that humor is truly subjective. Security quickly moved in surrounding us. Not to be demoralized, we tried to borrow money from them, as we insisted that we did not have enough to buy our way out of the museum – then came the real cops and we scattered. The long and short of it is, at the time I had no idea who Mondrian was, nor any comprehension of art as an evolutionary process. Although I have thrown in a bit of my own stylistic seasoning, Homage to Piet is intended be an earnest apology to the memory of a great man and a courageous artist. Sorry Piet!
